Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente

For you alone I will be weak.

"

A woman who hates you is playing the pianoforte.

You have five hundred a year. From who? Five hundred what? No one knows. No one cares. You have it. It’s yours. Every year. All five hundred of it.

A charming man attempts to flirt with you. This is terrible.

You are in a garden, and you are astonished.

it shouldn’t surprise me that tumblr’s tendency to opt for one extreme or the other means that shakespeare ends up being described as an uneducated dick joke machine, but it is still good to see people on my dash pointing out that he had a grammar school education and he wrote for a varied audience in various genres with a whole variety of humour, seriousness, and utter weirdness sometimes, and there’s a whole range of stuff you can like or not like in his works

yes this, so much. I mean, it’s not that the idea of Shakespeare as working-class hero is *offensive*; it’s just not *true* even if it’s framed as a positive — and the presence of dick jokes in a work, or the fact that it was originally intended as ephemeral entertainment, doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of serious examination. Fandom is built on that kind of stuff when it comes to modern media, after all, and most of that exists as a way of delivering us into the hands of advertisers.

make the night yours, destroy your way to oblivion. saints only preach in light, and the inner beast thrives best in darkness. sin will find you, it will change you, but you will still be human when the sun comes out. ( listen / download )
